Rebecca Black & the Youtube Generation

Official "Friday" Video

"It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday. Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend...Friday, Friday"

And so goes the most annoying song in the history of time. Somehow, a young teenager from middle America sang an annoying tune, posted it on YouTube and became an overnight sensation.

And Rebecca Black is not alone. YouTube has given a voice to any idiot with a camera and people with absolutely no talent are somehow getting their 15 minutes of fame.

How it happens

The Rebecca Blacks of the world decide they want to be famous and their pageant, fame-hungry parents tell them they are superb singers, musicians, whatever it is the kid loves (even if this isn't true).

So off they go to make videos and post to YouTube. It doesn't matter whether its good, bad or awful, what matters is hits.

The more people that click, comment and spread the video around, the better. So if your singing is terrible (like Rebecca Black) its actually a good thing because now your video is being passed around amongst the internet world as something to watch.

Just like a car accident, you don't want to look but you just can't look away.

And suddenly, all the popular blogs are talking about you. Then the morning talk shows, the comedy late night shows and soon you are rolling in six figures for being talentless just like Rebecca Black.

A YouTube Generation of Music

Not every person discovered on YouTube is completely talentless. Justin Beiber was discovered via YouTube and even if you don't like his music, you have to admit the boy can actually sing.

And who knows who else might be discovered. YouTube is a great and fun tool to share videos and laugh at silly things.

But its also aiding talentless singers in pushing their bad music down our throats and then getting paid for it.

Already now we are getting into the YouTube Generation within the music industry. No longer do you have to bust your chops with years of practice, now just the hope of your video going viral seems to be enough.

Making it stop

Are you tired of all the bad singers and bad music? Well, next time you are about to click on a video that showcases a talentless wannabe, stop and do not click.

Instead, go and watch a video by a real artist, whichever is your favorite. And don't forward the video either.

It's fun to watch and make fun but at the end of the day you are just aiding in spreading the awfulness.

And yea hearing that Rebecca Black is making six figures while you struggle to pay the rent/mortgage should be enough to stop you from clicking on future bad artists.

However, its already too late for Ms. Black so be sure to watch her "Friday" video that I have so conveniently added for you above!

It is true. Anyone can get famous on YouTube now. The less talent, the better. I am thinking I might need to get in on the action. After all, I stink at singing just as much as the next person. Of course, I am afraid I can write better lyrics, but I will just have to dumb that down. Great hub, by the way. Oh, when I post my terrible YouTube video, I want you to be the first to write a hub about it, too!

The funny thing is that it went viral not because most thought it was a good song, but because it was mostly annoying or awful. That's the thing about getting free promotion via YouTube. If people had to pay to listen to that song, it wouldn't have gone viral. YouTube is a blessing and a curse...hmmm, like many other things in life.

It's the parents of these kids that really annoy me. I completely understand that they can't tell their kid that they're awful at singing, but encouraging them to post videos on the internet? No - they didn't have internet when they were kids, but they must know what sort of an attitude people adopt when they're in front of a computer screen.

It's no surprise to anyone but the kid when they get crusified.

It reminds me of that show - Toddlers in Tiaras. The stuff is just creepy - Mums pushing their kids to succeed in areas they couldn't.
